Cluster of Excellence
Several subinstitutes of the IAM are involved, some of them in a leading role, in two clusters of excellence successfully acquired at KIT within the framework of the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments.

German Science Slam Championship 2018 | Dr. Anastasia August (IAM-CMS) could achieve the (shared) second place at the German Science Slam Championship in November in Wiesbaden. In her contribution "Overcoming Thermal Resistance" she explained the principle of an autonomous heat storage module based on kerosene. |
Jens Reiser receives SOFT Innovation Prize | In the context of SOFT-2018 (Sicily), Dr.-Ing. Jens Reiser (IAM-AWP) was awarded. He received the first prize of the SOFT Innovation Prize of the European Commission for his contribution "Ductile tungsten (W): Novel rolling technique opens a new era for commercial exploitation of tungsten". |
Astrid Pundt Professor at the IAM | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Astrid Pundt has held the chair "Material Characterization" at the IAM-WK since mid-June 2018. Previously, she was a professor at the Institute of Materials Physics at the University of Göttingen funded by the Heisenberg Program. |
Faculty Teaching Award 2018 for Anastasia August | Upon proposal of the student council, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering awarded Dr. Anastasia August (IAM-CMS) the Faculty Teaching Prize 2018 for her lecture "Microstructure Simulation". The award was presented during the KIT Annual Celebration on April 19. |
Ruth Schwaiger Meeting Chair of the 2019 MRS Spring Meeting. | Dr. Ruth Schwaiger (IAM-WBM) has been named Meeting Chair of the Materials Research Society (MRS), alongside Yuping Bao (University of Alabama), Bruce Dunn (University of California), Subodh Mhaisalkar (Nanyang Technological University), and Subhash L. Michael Schönleber receives Carl Freudenberg Award | Dipl.-Ing. Michael Schönleber (IAM-ET) was awarded the Carl Freudenberg Prize 2017 (1st place) for his dissertation "Method for characterizing the low-frequency behavior of lithium-ion batteries". The prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, serves to promote science at KIT. It is awarded every two years. |
European Research Council Consolidator Grant to Christian Greiner | The aim of the working group headed by Dr. Christian Greiner (IAM-CMS) is to reduce the consumption of energy and raw materials by reducing friction and wear. The European Research Council (ERC) has now awarded Dr. Greiner a Consolidator Grant and will fund him with two million euros over the next five years. Link to KIT press release |
