Printable plastics
The list of printable plastics is very long, which does not simplify the selection of suitable materials. The triangle of plastics shows the classification of common 3D printing materials. The price of filaments tends to rise with increasing performance, which is why it is important to consider which material is required for the planned application.
The following table contains an (incomplete) list of materials with properties that can help you make the right choice.
Material | Printing temperature (°C) | Bed temperature (°C) | Permanent operating temperature (°C)* | Particularities |
ABS | 220-250 | 95-110 | 95 | Weather-resistant, except UV radiation, can be smoothed by acetone, is suspected of releasing toxic fumes and fine dust during printing, high toughness and stability |
ASA | 235-280 | 90-110 | 95 | Similar to ABS, UV-resistant |
Bendlay | 215-250 | 20-40 | 70-95 | High adhesion between the layers, transparent |
HIPS | 190-245 | 110-115 | 85 | Similar to ABS, very high impact strength, solubility in limonene, can therefore be used as a support material |
PA/Nylon | 220-270 | 75-105 | 80-95 (160) | Slightly flexible |
PC | 260-310 | 80-120 | 125 (135) | Transparent, high impact resistance, strength, stiffness and hardness, must be dried before printing |
HDPE | 180-260 | 65-110 | 90 (120) | Waterproof, weather-resistant, food approval |
PEEK | 350-410 | 130-145 | 260 (310) | High temperature resistant, resistant to chemicals, must be dried before printing, very strong warping |
PEKK-A | 350-400 | 120-160 | 260 | Fireproof class UL94 V-0, similar properties to PEEK, better printability, must be dried before printing |
PETG | 230-250 | 75-90 | 70 | Transparent, weather and UV-resistant, high impact strength, food approval, fire-resistant class UL94 V-0, tends to string during printing |
PLA | 190-230 | 45-70 | 50 | Considered sustainable due to petrochemical-free production, low weather resistance, very widely used, easy to print |
PMMA | 230-265 | 100-120 | 90 | Clear (known as acrylic or Plexiglas), weatherproof, high hardness and rigidity, impact and scratch resistant |
PP | 220-250 | 60-100 | 100 | Food approved, dishwasher safe and suitable for microwaves, good chemical resistance, high mechanical stability |
PVA | 185-200 | 45-60 | 55 | Water-soluble, must be dried before printing |
PVB | 210-230 | 60-75 | Smoothing with alcohol, must be dried before printing | |
TPE/TPU | 220-240 | 40-60 | 80 (100) | Very flexible, must be printed very slowly |
