Competence

The Structure and Stress Analysis group focuses on:

  • the physical metallurgy of metal/ceramic composites and of two-phase alloys
  • the analysis of residual stresses in structural components, especially in mechanically treated edge zones
  • the development and application of advanced nondestructive techniques for materials characterization using X-rays our ultrasonic waves

Current research projects include:

  • the mechanics of short-fiber reinforced metal matrix composites, with focus on the effects of internal load transfer and microstructural damage
  • the structure and mechanical behaviour of novel metal/ceramic composites based on freeze-cast ceramic preforms
  • the nondestructive characterization of pores and microcracks in ceramic/ceramic composites and their effects on their elastic properties
  • setting up the laboratory „KIT-NanoLab∂ANKA“, an experimental platform for materials research using advanced synchrotron radiation techniques (in cooperation with the Laboratory for the Application Synchrotron Radiation and the KIT Research Center
